2nd album from 1992 by Swedish Death Metal innovators EDGE OF SANITY and one of the most important Scandinavian Death Metal releases of the early 1990s. Released just one year after "Nothing But Death Remains", "Unorthodox" showcased a remarkable leap forward in the band's songwriting and artistic ambitions. Led by Dan Swanö, EDGE OF SANITY significantly expanded the boundaries of traditional Death Metal through the incorporation of progressive elements, richer atmospheres and a surprising level of compositional diversity. Recorded once again at the legendary Sunlight Studios and produced by Tomas Skogsberg, the album marked the true emergence of the band's unique artistic identity.
Within the EDGE OF SANITY catalog, "Unorthodox" represents the first major creative breakthrough that would eventually lead to later masterpieces such as "The Spectral Sorrows", "Purgatory Afterglow" and "Crimson". While retaining its aggression and classic Swedish guitar sound, the band began experimenting with more complex song structures, unexpected tempo changes, melodic passages and greater vocal variety, displaying a level of ambition rarely found within Death Metal at the time. Widely regarded as one of the key releases of the band's career, the album firmly established EDGE OF SANITY as one of the most innovative and unpredictable acts in the genre.
